The Three Sisters are machine stitched, textile portraits of my daughters. Here, they are seen at an exhibition at The Holy Biscuit, Newcastle upon Tyne. They are made using the free-hand stitch on my sewing machine, painted with acrylic then decorated using pieces of the girls old clothes, beads, pages from favourite books and music.
In each portrait, I have tried to portray aspects of the girls individual personalities.
This piece is one of 25 patchwork panels, each 55 cm square, I am making using ‘English Paper Piecing’, which is individually hand-sewn using paper backing. The finished piece will be what’s called a ‘sampler’ quilt. In just this one piece there has been over 20 hours work.
When I first purchased this chair for re-upholstering, it was missing a leg and all it’s joints were like a broken body. It was completely stripped, a new leg made by a lovely local wood-turner, it was structurally repaired and re-upholstered in beautiful purple silk.
